Glass
beads became a commodity that explorers took with them as they travelled to the
Americas, Asia and Africa beginning in the 16th c. Beads became
the most sought after gift that European explorers would take with them; the
demand was tremendous. To the tribes of Africa, these colorful beads became important components
in both their rituals and personal adornment. Natural resources were plentiful
on the African continent, but methods to produce the beautiful glass beads they
desired were not. Chevron as well as millefiori beads and white hearts
travelled world wide and are favorites among collectors
today.
